About this trip

This six-day tour of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle and south-west coast offers strong links to geography and environmental science. Students examine rural land use and traditional farming during a village tour, study spice cultivation and the Ayurvedic properties of plants at guided gardens in Matale and Mawanella, and investigate conservation work first-hand at a sea turtle hatchery and in the protected mangrove wetlands of the Madu River.

Heritage and wildlife study sit alongside this. The group ascends the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to look at ancient engineering, frescoes and landscaped water gardens, and takes a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park to observe wild elephants, deer, crocodiles and birdlife in their natural habitat. Time in Kandy covers the city, its lake and local markets, with an optional cultural dance show.

Logistics: the itinerary begins and ends at Bandaranaike International Airport, with two nights in Dambulla, one in Kandy and two in Bentota on a half-board basis in four- or five-star hotels. Transport is by sedan car or KDH van with an English-speaking chauffeur, and prices vary by group size. The travel period quoted is 1 November to 15 December 2026. Entrance fees, flights and visas are not included.

Arrival and Village Life

Airport to Dambulla
Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport and meet and greet with a representative, then a drive of approximately 150 km (three hours) to Sigiriya in Sri Lanka's cultural heartland. An authentic village tour follows, travelling by tuk tuk, tractor or catamaran to meet local villagers and observe long-established farming, cooking and craft practices, concluding with a village-style lunch. Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Minneriya National Park
After breakfast, climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, taking in the water gardens, Lion Gate, preserved frescoes and views from the summit. In the afternoon, a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park crosses grasslands, forest and the Minneriya Tank, with the chance to see large herds of wild elephants as well as deer, monkeys, crocodiles and birdlife. Breakfast and check-out, then a drive of approximately 75 km (two hours) to Kandy, stopping en route for a guided visit to a spice garden in Matale. Spice Gardens to Turtle Coast
Cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla growing in a Mawanella garden, then a coastal hatchery where rescued turtles and hatchlings head for the Indian Ocean.

Kandy to Bentota
A journey of 180 km (approximately 4.5 hours) to the coast. En route, visit a spice and herbal garden at Mawanella to see cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and vanilla growing and to learn about Ayurvedic plant uses and spice processing. Continue to a sea turtle hatchery, where students learn about egg collection, hatching, the rescue of injured adults and the release of hatchlings into the Indian Ocean. Madu River wetlands and water sports
A safari boat ride through the protected Madu River mangrove wetlands, passing mangrove tunnels, small islands and fishing villages, with opportunities to spot water birds, monitor lizards and other wildlife. In addition, a supervised water sports session on the Bentota River with one tube ride, one jet ski ride and one banana boat ride per person, with safety equipment provided. Overnight in Bentota.

Departure from Colombo
A final Sri Lankan breakfast precedes the two-hour road journey across the coastal plain to Bandaranaike International Airport for the flight home.
