Livingstone

Livingstone sits on the northern bank of the Zambezi at the point where the river drops into the Batoka Gorge, giving school groups a base beside one of the world's great natural landmarks and inside a working Zambian town rather than a resort enclave. Schools choose it because meaningful community and conservation placements sit within a short drive of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, and because Zambia's use of English as its official language allows students to work directly alongside local partners from day one.

The town itself is the teaching resource: the Livingstone Museum on Mosi-oa-Tunya Road holds the country's oldest collections, including David Livingstone's letters and maps and strong ethnographic and archaeological galleries, while the Railway Museum records the town's origins as a colonial railhead beside the 1905 Victoria Falls Bridge. Volunteering groups typically pair placement days with visits to Mukuni Village, a Leya community settlement south-east of the falls, and Maramba Market, both of which give students an honest picture of the local economy their work feeds into. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, on the town's doorstep, adds a conservation dimension with white rhino monitoring and riverside habitat work.
