A school group comes to the Indian Himalaya for something a classroom cannot supply: mountain communities where school building, environmental work and Tibetan refugee support are ongoing, visible and genuinely under-resourced. From Dubai it is a short flight to Delhi and a connecting hop or scenic road transfer into Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand or Ladakh, which makes a substantial service placement possible within a single term break.
The Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj area is the practical base for most of our placements, with the Tsuglagkhang Complex and the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives giving students the historical context for the exile community they will be working alongside, and the Norbulingka Institute at Sidhpur demonstrating how thangka painting, wood carving and metalwork are being deliberately preserved. Groups working further north in Ladakh visit SECMOL's solar-powered campus at Phey and the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies at Choglamsar, both of which show sustainable design and education reform operating at altitude. Kangra Fort, the Kangra Art Museum and the Bhagsu and Bhagsunag valleys round out the cultural and geographical picture without diluting the service focus.

Placements range from teaching English and computer skills in Tibetan Children's Villages schools around Dharamshala to trail maintenance and waste-segregation projects with Waste Warriors in the Dharamkot and Bhagsu catchments, and construction or gardening support at village schools in the Kangra Valley.
When to travel
Altitude governs everything here: Dharamshala sits at around 1,450 metres and McLeod Ganj higher still, so days can be mild while mornings and evenings turn genuinely cold, and Ladakh is colder and drier again. Groups should pack layers, proper walking shoes and sun protection regardless of season, as high-altitude sun is strong even when the air is cool.
