Vienna

Vienna is the city where Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Mahler all lived and worked within a few square kilometres, and where their manuscripts, instruments and apartments survive as visitable places rather than footnotes. For a music department, it offers something rare: a full week in which students can study a score in the morning, stand in the room where it was written by lunchtime, and hear it performed properly that evening.

Groups work across the Haus der Musik in the first district, the Mozarthaus Vienna on Domgasse where Le nozze di Figaro was written, the Beethoven Museum in Heiligenstadt where the composer drafted the Heiligenstadt Testament, and the Collection of Historic Musical Instruments in the Neue Burg wing of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Performance visits typically include the Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic and its Golden Hall, the Wiener Konzerthaus, and the Staatsoper on the Ringstrasse, where standing tickets make opera genuinely accessible to a student group. The Zentralfriedhof, with the graves of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and the Strauss family, and St Stephen's Cathedral, where Haydn sang as a chorister and Mozart married, anchor the whole itinerary geographically.
