Austria offers music students the rare chance to study where the repertoire they play was written, from Mozart's Salzburg birthplace to the concert halls of Vienna. Vienna is one of the few cities where students can visit the apartments where Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert actually lived and worked, then hear the same works performed at the Musikverein or Vienna State Opera the same evening. The Haus der Musik offers hands-on acoustic experiments and a virtual conducting exhibit, while Salzburg's Mozarteum holds original manuscripts and instruments. Many visiting ensembles are able to perform in Austrian churches and halls, giving students an authentic audience rather than a school hall.
