A multi-centre programme in Sri Lanka lets a school group work alongside communities in more than one setting — a Colombo suburb, a Kandyan village, a coastal town near Galle — rather than seeing the country from a coach window. With a direct flight of under five hours from Dubai and no significant time difference, it is one of the most efficient long-haul volunteering destinations available to schools in the UAE.
Groups typically base themselves across three regions: the Western Province around Colombo and Negombo, the Central Highlands around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, and the southern coast around Galle and Unawatuna. Between placement days there is genuine substance to visit — the Colombo National Museum and its Dutch Period Museum, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, the Galle Fort ramparts and its Maritime Archaeology Museum, and the rock citadel at Sigiriya with the cave temples at Dambulla. Placements are arranged with established partners in areas such as school refurbishment, English conversation support, turtle hatchery work on the south coast, and conservation tasks in tea-growing communities near Ella and Haputale.

When to travel
Sri Lanka is tropical and warm year-round at sea level, with Colombo and Galle sitting in the high twenties to low thirties Celsius and considerable humidity, while the hill country around Nuwara Eliya is markedly cooler and can feel cold after dark. Two monsoons act on opposite coasts at different times, so an itinerary can usually be shaped around the weather rather than cancelled by it.
