Kathmandu

Kathmandu sits in a bowl-shaped valley at around 1,400 metres, where seven UNESCO-listed monument zones stand within a short drive of one another and everyday life still runs through medieval courtyards and temple squares. For a school group flying from Dubai, it offers something rare: a city where meaningful, well-supervised community work can sit alongside genuine cultural learning, all within one compact valley.

The valley itself is the classroom — Kathmandu Durbar Square with the Hanuman Dhoka palace complex and the Kumari Ghar, the finely restored Patan Durbar Square and its Patan Museum, and the brick-and-woodcarving streets of Bhaktapur, much of it rebuilt since the 2015 earthquake. Groups also visit the Boudhanath stupa and its surrounding Tibetan community, the hilltop Swayambhunath complex above the city, and the riverside ghats at Pashupatinath on the Bagmati. Volunteering placements are typically based in valley-edge settlements such as Bungamati and Khokana, or with schools and community organisations in the Kathmandu and Lalitpur wards, where partners are vetted and students work on defined, non-residential projects.
